I think it is weird that everyone just assumes that Atsumori is using a force composed entirely of samurai, or even trained soldiers. The bulk of any medieval military is peasant conscripts, in this case ashigaru. They'd be equipped by the samurai, usually with spears because stick the pointy end in the other guy takes very little training. The way to identify a samurai is usually by how fancy his armor is and if he has a sword. Most of the rank and file red armor guys just have spears by the look of it so they are most likely farmers like these guys with maybe a little more training.
